Recent policy decisions within the UK have led to significant changes in the Armed Forces. The Armed Forces are moving towards a ‘whole force’ structure to integrate regular and reservist (formerly known as Territorials/TA) personnel.
Numbers of full-time (regular) personnel will reduce and part-time (reservists) increase, so that by 2020 when most of the changes will be in place, reservists will make up more than one-quarter of the UK Armed Forces.
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has joined with the British Army and Ministry of Defence to commission 4 research projects to address some of the issues facing the Armed Forces as they introduce these changes. The 4 projects will run between 2014 – 2017:
- Keeping enough in reserve
- Negotiating civilian and military lives
- Sustaining Future Reserves 2020
- The role of army reservists
An integration team is co-ordinating this programme of work to encourage and support the uptake of the research findings by relevant policy and practice communities.
